Tete, An stopover from nowhere to nowhere.

I was surprised by the first view to Mozambique. I was comming from the unsafe Zimbabwe and looking for something better in Malawi but I didn't expected that I could be surprised by an small Mozambiquean city at the Zambezi River.

Zambaze River.
Zambaze River.
Despiting the really bad reputation of hot city and the most unpopular city in Mozambique.. even called the hell by the missionaires, I decided to stay for one night here. Ok! It was not a great and unforgettable experience but was a good chance to see the life of the forgotten ones. When the bus stopped somewhere in Tete I felt completly lost ... was not the first time in Africa! But Tete is not a big city and taking the big Zambezi river as a center you can be easily orientated. Tete is near the Cahora bassa Dam, a big lake with amazingly big fishes, and all the area around the city is heavily densed by forests.

Favourite spots:
People at the river side.
People at the river side.
For me the best there was just walk around to see the normal life of that small city. Was great go to the Zambezi river to see the children playing and the women washing clothes. The central market was really alive and busy ... but also very dirty!!! I was not really convinced to buy anything to eat there. After some weeks in Zimbabwe and big shortage of chocolate, sugar, salt, bread, and some other foods ... here, in Tete, I found all this again and was nice to taste again good food.

What's really great:
Big Baobab.
Big Baobab.
The best to do in Tete is out of the city. There is a big forest of tall baobabs that can impress anyone. That big trees are really old and the size and shapes are extremely rare making your imagination start thinking on strange monsters. It was a half day excursion with a local taxi driver for some Usd$ and it worths cause I spent a nice time with that guy and the baobabs.

Sights:
Tete have nothing to see indeed.
The only three options are:
1. Spend your time looking the daily life at Zambezi River.
2. Go out the city for a Baobabs tour.
3. Go further to Cahora Bassa Dam and anjoy the day there ... or fishing if you like it.

Accommodations:
There are three places to stay over the rest.
The Tete Hotel is big and quite nice. With all the facilities and can be seen from almost everywhere.
Reasonably priced with bathroom inside.
Univendas Tete was at Nyerere Street and the rates were cheaper around 12 Usd$ for a single room.
The Pensao Alves was the first I saw cause is near where the buses stop.
But I was not convinced cause of the enormous cocaraches that I saw at the shared bathroom.
Was cheap but I don't want to be hurt by a giant roaring cocrach!!!

Restaurants:
Around the unspiring market there are some restaurants like the pic-nic or the Severao restaurant .... but buffff! I don't think is a good idea for foreigners.
The only place to find another rolling stone like me was at the well known Complexo Pemba at the riverfront of the Zambezi River.
That's the best place for a bier and some less suspicious food.

Other recommendations:
Along Avenida 25 de Junho is where the buses come and go.
From there you can take the buses to Harare in Zimbabwe, to Blantyre in Malawi or to nearer locations in Mozambique like Zobue or Nyamapanda.
There's one internet cafe near the Tete Hotel but is expensive and slow.
