Vélez Blanco, a secret

High mountains, valleys, forests... but also desert and rocky landscapes... it is Vélez Blanco… history, an oasis of tranquility and an unknown place to visit

Vélez Blanco is located in southern Spain, but in the north of Almería province. It is surely the purest medieval village of Almería. The first thing we see in our arriving to Vélez Blanco is a stunning castle. Located in a hill, Fajardo’s castle safeguard the nice and small village of Vélez Blanco. Two floors homes with stone’s fronts and brown roofs, stone pavements, narrow and straightened streets, flowery balconies and windows… transport us directly to remote times. Serenity and tranquillity. relaxing moments to walk, to breathe pure air, to eat the rich gastronomy of this village are the things we will find here. You surely return with nice recollectios and renewed mind.

One of the most interesting things of this village is the Fajardo's castle. Firstly, this castle was arabic but when Catholic Kings reconquered it, they turned it to Fajardo's family. Nowadays, the castle is renacentist with a rich artistic patrimony. A curious thing is that, in 1900, two Americans came here to study this castle, they robbed marble sculptures and these works are now in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Another important nice place to see is Cueva de Los Letreros. It is a prehistoric cave where there are prehistoric paintings too, declared World Human Heritage Site by the UNESCO, here was born the symbol of Almería, El Indalo. This symbol is a man with an arch and it represents good look if you give it to someone.

What's really great:
Serenity, nature, history and charm places are together. It is nice to hear stories and anecdotes of the castle and the village.

Sights:
Sights are really wonderful here. We are in a mountain so we can see valleys, other small villages and at winter sometimes there is snow in Sierra María. You can go to the castle, here there are a beautiful sight of the whole village. If you like to walk, you can go to the surroundings of the village where you will find nice views to take photos or to relax. You can be calm here, it is not usually to rain so it is a good place to know the nature.

Accommodations:
There are many rural hotels, cottages and a camping. The last one is a very nice resort with swimming pool, beautiful gardens and close to the village. Another place to stay is Hotel Velad Al-Abydah (www.hotelvelad.com), it is a famous place to eat in Vélez Blanco with fantastic views of the region.

Nightlife:
Nightlife in this village does not exist. There are not pubs, discotheques or bars for young people. It is a village with 3.000 population, most of them old people but, if you look for nightlife, you can go to Vélez Rubio, a village near Vélez Blanco where there are many pubs and a good nightlife.
