Vientiane travelogue picture
Laos is just jungle everyehere. Jungle in every direction where you can look at. No big cities, so quite and calm, sometimes relaxing. Vientiane is the capital city but is a little city. Walk all around is a pleasure, the city streets, the temples (Wats), it´s ok!
Is like a city in the middle of nowhere surrounded by jungle at the Mekong river side.
The bund can be really beautiful during the rainy seasson when the Mekong is high.
There's not so many traffic so it isn't a noisy city, just some 4X4 cars and some tricicle-motorbikes to move around.
Sincerely ... this city can be seen in 1 or 2 days.

Favourite spots:
Vientiane travelogue picture
Vientiane is not really interesting.
Is the best place to get your Visas and to have your first contact with the Laotian religion (Bhudism) and culture.
You can easily go to a Wat and chat with some of the monks (With a lot of patience and a good transator book!!!). There are monks everywhere.
If your interest is go to Luang Phrabang, then Vientiane is a good place to stay a couple of days and introduce yourself to their culture.
I recommend you to break for some days your way to Luang Phrabang at Van Vieng.

What's really great:
Vientiane travelogue picture
The people is great, warm and friendly. If you like jungle trekings, adventure sports or religion centers laos is your country.
For a city visits there's not too much to see.
The Patutxai door is maybe the most important architecture atraction.
It was built with the cement destined to build an american airport and they did a nice 4 doors arch with a great view of the city from the top.
There are so many Wats (Bhudist Temples) cause of their dedication to the religion.

Accommodations:
Phet Phim Guesthouse was 3 usd/night for a single room but with clean shared bathroom.
Was Ok, and the family who run the hostel where helpful all the time.
They had laundry service and internet conection.
It was near the Mekong river in front of the bund.
There are so many hostels near the central square for about 2 usd$.
Generally is a cheap city.

Restaurants:
The cheapest is go to eat at the central market and the surroundings but it can be noisy and busy sometimes.
Anyway there are a lot of restaurants along the bund that can be really cheap, cheap, reasonable or expensive depending on how near are from the central square.
There are also some street selers to buy some kind of fast-foods.
