It can hardly be called a city, but it's got charm

Vientiane is just a small, quiet town with chickens walking in the street, some motos and the occasional car (most of which seem to belong to foreign relief workers). It's quiet, relaxing and charming.

Favourite spots:
Reading by the fountain at the square in the city centre; strolling by the Mekong; That Luang.

What's really great:
The Scandinavian Bakery... I know it sounds horrible, but after two months on rice and grease...let's just say plain bread and cheese has never tasted so delicious. Even had a month old Swedish newspapers ;-) The That Luang is beautiful. But Vientiane isn't mainly a place for the great attractions. Looks a little unappealing at first, but give it a few days.

Sights:
According to the various guide-bibles these are few. That Luang - national symbol - is huge, golden and impressive. Quite nice. Saw some other thats and wats, but didn't really take notice of which.

Accommodations:
We were tired of moving around and stayed put at the first place we got to; Lao International GH, $6 for a double with cold shower, bad value for money. But there are plenty of guesthouses in the centre, most in the $3-10 range.

Nightlife:
I doubt it.

Hangouts:
Some along the riverside.

Restaurants:
Plenty. Above mentioned Scandinavian bakery, some rather posh Italian place right besides it was good, mainly ate from street stalls rest of the time. Excellent fresh pineapple.

Other recommendations:
The markets are amusing, especially the covered one. Everything from traditional carvings to bin Laden t-shirts.
And green soda in plastic bags can be tasty...
