Howdy Y'all

I'm finally doing my dream trip this Autumn/Fall, i'm flying into Vegas then driving across Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississipi, Louisiana, Texas (Again), and Arizona (Again), arriving back in Vegas to lose any money I have left before returning to London.

Planing to stop and do some touristy s**t along the way, maybe even follow some of the old route 66 as well as I40.

Any of you done anything similar?, any tips or advice?, anyone like to join me?

I would love to do a trip similar to yours oneday. I think thoughthat zig-zaging a bit slower one-way (say traditionally) east-to-west starting in say Orlando and returning [open fork] from Los Angeles to Europe saves backtracking. The distances are enormous!

Anyway, don't miss the touristy st**f at San Antonio, Galveston and check into funky/JAZZY New Orleans and please tell us how things are going there now after the hurricanes.... Rudi

How long have you got? Aside from the obvious Hoover Dam and a possible slight detour to see the London Bridge which is actually at Lake Havasu, AZ (relocated there during the 60s I think), one of my favorite places on earth is the Havasupai Reservation on Route 66 in the MIDDLE of nowhere, north of Seligman, Arizona (Seligman - home of the Road Kill Cafe, a must stop dinner). Here is a photo: http://www.globosapiens.net/cycleboy/picture-havasu-canyon-3489.html

There are three water falls once you descend into the Havasupai Canyon, a side canyon of the Grand Canyon. Each fall is a little different but all are an amazing shade of turquois blue, against red, red canyon walls and pools that are white with traverine mineral, all set in this lush green oasis in the middle of the Arizona Desert. The only downside is that you drive 30 miles off Route 66 to the trail head and it is 9 miles down to the falls. Horses can be rented if you make reservations beforehand, but you have to sepnd the night. Also a Helicopter Service makes trips a couple of times an hour. The Indian Village is 7 miles in - there are no cars - only horses. They live largely off the land. The board in the middle of town has a list of the most recent hunted game - where it was caught and by whom.

If you have time, an additional 8 mile (each way) hike will take you to the Colorado River/Grand Canyon. Also there is a little known trail near the cemetary that you can hike to the tip on one of the canyon cliffs to watch the sun rise over the Grand Canyon.

Happy Trails!

Many thanks Eire

I've given myself 3 weeks to do Vegas to Memphis, South to Biloxi and then West along the Gulf coast via New Orleans, Houston, El Paso, back into Arizona and back to Vegas, does it sound reasonable to you?, i'm thinking about 3,500 miles over 20 days should be OK

Thanks for the tips for stop offs on the way, I'll be passing the Hoover dam, so thats a definite stop off for me, and was also thinking about the Grand Canyon and staying the night around Sedona, before heading East again.

What about Motels, Motel6 seems the cheapest, and pretty wide spread throughout my route. Have you ever stayed in one?

The only real headache I have is the long drag between Houston and El Paso, have not really identified a good stop off spot there yet and would like to break that trip in half and do it in 2 days.

Thanks for the help and take care

Motel 6s are fairly safe - they are mostly 2 star affairs but a lot of the time, that's all you need. I actually stayed in the Motel Seligman 6 (not affilitaed) which is a 2 star motel right on Route 66. It was safe and had continental breakfast (donuts, coffee, juice), but nothing special. Fall can still be pretty hot in the desert, so you may want something with a pool. You are in a for wonderful adventure! I am jealous!
