Hi. My name is Rafael, I'm a 30-something American who'll be living in Guanajuato (central Mexico) until late spring of 2008 and I'd like to find two to four other people who love Mexico and would like to go to the beach town of Zipolite and other parts of the Mexican state of Oaxaca at Christmastime in 2007. I know Mexico well enough to get around on my own, but I really enjoy traveling in a small group and I'd like to find people who would be willing to split the cost of hotel rooms and anything else that can be shared by a few people.
I've never been to Zipolite, but I've decided that I'm going to do this trip no matter what. I'm planning to leave Guanajuato by bus on or around Dec. 22nd (the date could end up being one or two days earlier or later), then sightseeing for a day in Mexico City and continuing more or less directly by bus to Oaxaca City, Pochutla and finally to Zipolite. This would mean that we could meet up in Mexico City or Zipolite, or even in Guanajuato before the trip begins, which would be a lot of fun, as it's a beautiful town. I have an apartment here in Guanajuato with two spare beds, so anyone in the group who wants to crash at my place can do that for a maximum of two nights at the beginning or end of the trip. (You'd have to bring a sleeping bag or sheets, though, unless you don't mind sleeping on a bare mattress, as I don't have any spare sheets.)
In addition to Zipolite, I'd like to see a little bit more in the state of Oaxaca, but I do want to spend a minimum of four days in Zipolite. Once we get a group together, we could decide among ourselves which other places we'd like to see together, or people could strike out on their own if no one else feels like going to a particular place. Remember that Zipolite has a pretty alternative and hippie-ish vibe, and that a lot of people on the beach are nude, especially in December, so if any of that would bother you, this probably isn't the trip for you. Oh, and the accomodations will be budget, so we probably won't be staying anywhere that's close to being expensive unless the whole group is in agreement and we split the bill evenly.
I've been in Mexico for a while to improve my Spanish to the point that I can work as a Spanish-English translator, so my Spanish is fairly strong now. Because of that, I'll be able to take care of the essentials in Spanish for anyone in the group who doesn't speak the language, such as checking in at hostels and hotels and ordering in restaurants and bars. For shopping you'd be on your own, as I'm not much of a shopper, but I'd be glad to write out a list of phrases for you to use if you wanted to hit the markets.
