I have had problems with rating recently in deciding how much notice to take of the fact that a photo may be something of a cliché. To illustrate the point, there are three photos of the Golden Gate by two photographers up for rating now. I have never been to San Francisco but one of them I recognise as something I have seen many times. The problem is that it is the most informative about the Golden Gate of the three – no doubt the reason why it’s so familiar.

I shall be going to Peru in September for the first time but in my mind now I can see one of my future photos. It’s a great view and has thus been taken by Heaven knows how many photographers. If I show it here along with others of the same site that are in themselves less interesting, how far should originality count against information?

Hi,

Some time ago in a discussion on photo rating, someone said that the highest rating should go to a picture that causes the viewer to feel "I could look at that all day!!"

So if a picture is of that ilk and technically without significant fault the factors that i apply for bonus points do not arise.

Where a picture falls outside the criteria above but is a very imaginative view (i emember one with the member appearing to hold the setting sun in her hand!!) I add a point.

Likewise for exotic locations about which I can only dream i frequently add another point.

For me Peru is exotic.

Have a wonderful time there

Hugh

Hello David and Hugh,

..ive been wondering about the "rating" thing for both reports and pictures a while now and agree with the above. While we set a lot of rules and guidelines a few months ago for rating, David has brought up a valuable point that perhaps was not noticed or properly emphasised there. The main point was quality but we really should rate originality first.

"Cliché" = everything (usually phrases) that are over-used, over seen, overrated and not special anymore, very simple and used by masses. This relates to pictures too.

I once wrote: "A really special exotic and special picture, even not technical perfect, is worth 10x that of a regular tourist shot..."

Didn't Robert Burns have something to say about well laid schemes? So my anticipated picture of Macchu Piccu won't be here - nor others of the site. I never made it there!

David, we cann't always choose our paths. Missing Ma'Pichu, one of 200 ultimate world heritage sites, is disappointing but not sad, neither tragic. Important is to recognise unique travel goals we have already made and plan/hope (luck is also needed) better in the future. Iv'e missed dozens such very close chances too and know the feeling. Important is also to share the pictures that WERE possible, a lot of people don't because they THINK their pictures don't look like the postcard they saw, they are WRONG. Further, being able to describe the "secret" parts of the world specially like you have for Britain is wonderful. See my quote above: I mean those contributions are worth 10 times more than the clichès which we all already know.

Hi There

In another post about picture rating I gave my view about clichés I decided to cut the relevant part and post it here to:

Yes we want those clichés. That's what we know about those places. That's what we would like to see for ourselfes... we need those shots too! The fact that a lot of people took the same shots, or the fact that they are on postcards means, that they most probably are the most interesting shots possible of the particular place.

It's our duty to give those cliché shots a personal note make them special and try to get a feeling in them... that is truly difficult.

Have a great day

Martin
