Obviously grading can't be 'wrong' since judgements of photos are subjective but I must say I'm surprised that my photo http://www.globosapiens.net/davidx/pictures-ribes-before-mist-23879.html is currently a grade higher than http://www.globosapiens.net/davidx/pictures-nuria---chairlift-in-mist-23880.html.

I only uploaded the former as a contrast to the latter and to show how rapidly conditions changed, whereas I thought the chairlift in mist was far more interesting.

I should really welcome some frank opinions here. That's how we all improve.

Cheers, David

David,

You are right - rating is subjective. I never know whether to upload for subject matter or for artistic quality. I admit to liking the "Before the Mist" photo better for the play of light and shadow, as well as the coloring. I also have been surprised by what people have responded to in my photos, and what has been unappealing. Not sure what the right answer is, but I will say that I always find you pics very well composed!

Thanks for this Eire. I was getting to think that asking for observations on my own photos was a bit like breaking wind in church! I find it a pity that it doesn't happen more. I should be quite willing myself to write about people's photos - but only if they ask.

Hi David

I too like the second picture better:

www.globosapiens.net/davidx/pictures-ribes-before-mist-23880.html

(photo) technicaly **

subject ****

artisticaly ***

travel/nature worth****

+ more subject too it

+ mist always gives a soft touch

+ partial silouette of mountain nice

- grey (less blue and green)

- chairlifts look broken and bumper-to-bumper

- what is a "cag"???

my TOTAL ***/**** (GLOBO 3.0 by 6 votes)

I like the pre-view too, but less, others more. It is though a very different picture and cannot really be compared to that above:

www.globosapiens.net/davidx/pictures-ribes-before-mist-23879.html

(photo) technically ***

subject **

artistic***

travel/nature ***

+ bit more blue and green in it (GLOBOs love that)

+ fresh and natural air mountain scenery

- for me somewhat dull, could be from many mountains

GLOBOs like this "natural" shot more than next mechanical or people stuff!

my TOTAL **/*** (GLOBO total 3,2 by 5 votes)

I wish more members would rate things, after 10-20 ratings a true reflection of quality should be reached...

Regards

Rudi

Thanks, Rudi, for this detailed crit. I agree entirly with your last point. I spend quite a bit of time myself rating photos and I often find after rating that I am giving one point more or less than the average [I try not to see this until after so that I am giving my own grading without being influenced by it.

Often a photo can be thought between two grades and that's when a lot of gradings can help get the 'right' result.

... I must add that my usual rating process is not so complicated, dont want members to be frighted off, its better to rate "from-the-gut" than not at all. I usually rate a pic by "first site" and within about 3-5 seconds. Only a specially interesting picture and also when deciding between **** and ***** stars might I look at it for 20 seconds and sometimes much longer!

Many other factors also influence rating. While the chair-lift might be a better picture, one member might have a fear of them or had a bad experience, unconciously then rating it down or lower than the pure mountain shot?

Also, just the fact that one pic was rated more than the other (5 vs 6 times) could effect the average since some rate higher/lower according to destination or even member!!!
