This may be a bad title because it was started as a result of

http://www.globosapiens.net/marcosfonsec/picture-stone-of-the-helmet-pedra-do-capacete.-32129.html?cu=1 and clearly Marcos doesn't claim that his wife gives perspective - in fact he says the opposite - 'This picture doesn't show the true height of the stone.' It's a picture of his wife in a beautiful place, a very good one for which I gave 4*.

My own photo, http://www.globosapiens.net/davidx/picture-sachsaywaman---person-perspective-26904.html, does use my wife to give perspective to stones. I deliberately kept her obscure and thus she is clearly not the subject of the picture. There is a clear cost to this in having too much shade. However the picture also has a 4* rating.

I think that Marcus has done a better photo than me technically but that mine is more completely travel related. It will be a bad day for Globo if either type of picture becomes unacceptable.

Hi David

People in pictures... an interesting subject, it is and it provoked a lot of discussions lately :-)

My views of people in pictures are very simple.

I like pictures of people doing things, people that don't look in the camera, people that are not aware their photo has been taken, people that happen to be in the picture without any special reason, passers by, people on markets, people on trains, busses... as passengers. Most of all local people, local people we meet on our travels, people we interact with when visiting those places or people we just see passing by.

I don't like people who pose.

Perhaps you like to read the following, invented scene, as an illustration of my point:

Bob our virtuall tourist is happening to stay in Rome on his Europe in 5 days trip. He stands with gaping open mouth in front of the Spanish Stairs and thinks: well I have to show this to those at home. He snaps out his camera, points and then suddenly he remembers that he is not alone on this trip, hell no! I have to put my wife in it, just to make it nicer and as a proof that she was with me. Bob now has his wife posing in front of the stairs and he starts regressing, because either she or the stairs wouldn't fit in the picture and eventually he stumbels and falls. After a lot of shouting and arguments and a hurt ankle he composes himself, the obeying wife poses again, puts on a wry, cheeeeese smile and click thats it. Bob proudly displays his pictures at home, but the lookers aren't impressed but get tired after a while, because in every picture he or his fellow travellers are shown.

Jane, an open eyed traveller, happens to be at the same place, at the same time and observes the spectacle. As it is so obvious what will happen next, Jane takes out her camera and follows the procedings. At just the right moment she presses the trigger and gets the whole scene in her camera. As she was moving around to get the right angle and the sun behind herself she has a great scene. At home she shows the picture and tells the whole story with colorful details and gets rounds of applause for her picture!

Can you guess which picture I like to see?

Just my thoughts

Martin

David,

as a reply to your post:

Your pciture obviously is fully acceptable because your intention never was to show off your wife but just used or abused her for showing the size of the structure. It could even have been better with a few people all intently observing the details of the wall some here some there to make it lively.

see frenchfrogs pic as example:

http://www.globosapiens.net/frenchfrog/picture-sacsayhuaman-1-31123.html

(Ok the people are quite small and really hard to see, but in the big picture (size L) you can see them well enough)

Marcos pic however his wife is posing in front of this structure without any beneficial points to her being there because she isn't in the right scale. Perhaps she had to advance towards marcos, in order to see her better.

Look here for two pictures with the same content, also with people in it but far better solutions: Both of them would be perfectly suitable in my eyes for our gallery no matter who the people are.

Just my personal interpretations.

Martin

P.S. Sorry Rudi for including another external link but I think it's relevant for the topic and is a good explanation.

Martin,

Your story is an excellent example and entertaining to read.

Furthermore, I absolutely agree about not posing. I think that is what was wrong with the pictures in question.

I was worrying that ALL people pictures get banned and deleted from GLOBO but the above shown what we are and not are looking for at GLOBO :-)

Even pictures of people looking directly into the camera are OK if it is cleverly done and a bit exotic, traditional, cultural or at least a bit artistic. In the professional world of photography they are called "portraits" and are good part of travel photography too. There are a a lot of these gems in the "THEME: kids" just for a few good examples.

Also http://www.globosapiens.net/subtil/picture-girls-playing-with-clay-mud-32180.html

or http://www.globosapiens.net/britman/picture-sun-sand-sea---tina-on-koh-samui-10104.html and our very controversial http://www.globosapiens.net/marcosfonsec/picture-tambaus-beach.-to-the-bottom-the-cape-white.-32141.html are wonderful artistic portraits often found in glossy travel magazines and brochures and very welcome at GLOBO too?

Above, you are all talking about is the low quality family snapshot, those are terrible and should be discouraged. Another good point Marianne brought up was the percentage of too personal pics. For above 5% (1 of 20) the member should be contacted and asked to move them to his/her "travel log" ("blog").

Incidentally, I too have too many personal pics and even an album! www.globosapiens.net/rangutan/slide-show-autobiography-506.html

3% or 26/882 pictures is also high so to be an example to others I will be moving some of these to my "blog" soon :-) RR

Rudi I picked up your keywords kids and looking in the camera or not:

Some examples:

http://www.globosapiens.net/undedd/picture-chitwan-national-park-nepal-2259.html

phantastic shot of children at work, great colors, all very natural, the blur background gives a nice depth to the scene and the children are crisp and clear

http://www.globosapiens.net/status/picture-temple-kids-4566.html

Having been at pashputinath I clearly recognise this stupa, I think it's a very funny picture and a good point showing interaction with local kids, the dark blue sky and the flash which is white in the foreground and weakens towards the end make it very interesting. Even though those kids are posing I like this one :-)

http://www.globosapiens.net/esfahani/picture-making-friends-26341.html

These Kids here are clearly posing but still they seam to be an interesting enough subject especially the clothes. They suggest that now matter how dirty and ragged you look there's always room for smiles. A picture wich provokes emotions

http://www.globosapiens.net/paulobeli/picture-kids-32091.html

Great use of the children as foreground, they must sure shortly go to bed but will stay on until the sun sets fully...

http://www.globosapiens.net/downundergal/picture-kids-at-cheong-ek-30097.html

This picture is not as good as the others for me because these children are most certainly arranged for the shot and are clearly posing. It looks as though Kerrie might have been their teacher ;-)

http://www.globosapiens.net/bbleek/picture-kids-in-the-barrio-of-don-bosco-21365.html

Another clearly arranged picture of kids. If it wasn't for those great colors this picture wouldn't be very interesting. But honestly could be anywhere in the caribean

http://www.globosapiens.net/wojtekd/picture-kids-from-the-medina-29431.html

Clearly posing kids imagine them being white and the caption saying kids from london... what would your rate be?

Conclusion... hmmm Looking in the camera and even pose can get intersting shots. It's so hard to get strict guidelines. But still I prefer those action shots where people are doing something and are not aware that their picture has been taken.

More to follow on this subject

And as always these are my personal views and interpretations

Have a great day

Martin
