Hi Folks

For those interested in taking better pictures.

I just found an interesting Photographic Workshop online.

Orignal version:

http://www.prime-junta.net/pont/Photography_lessons/a_about/_Teaching_composition.html

German translation

http://www.loncarek.de/pages/Workshop/Workshop

I found it very well explained.

Hope it helps

Martin

It occurrs to me that we can have our own workshop here.

There is an example of "West Shore " on my site. It would be very helpful if the person who voted *** were to set out a brief note of the improvements required for this picture to reach ****

Hugh,

Have a look at my travel log. I tried to start workshops, but it never took off. Let me know if you are interested and I will do some workshops for your photos. (most of them are already perfect, though).

Could you give a link to your 'west shore'? I don't think I ever saw it.

If you are interested in a detailed discussion of your picture you could always open a new topic in this forum.

Like I did here:

http://www.globosapiens.net/topic-waterfall-in-venezuela-----please-give-your-comments_46_1179_0000.html

There everybody who's interested could give you feedback.

What do you think?

Hope it helps

Hi Martin

I think a new forum might be unnecessary as the comment facility allows as much discussion as anyone could ask. It is however almost always necessary to ask for details as people giving points to reflect improvements appropriate to the picture seldom give any details.

A very good example was a recent desert picture where a full analysis and discussion ensued when requested.

Perhaps this might be the most simple effective and time saving way forward.

Of course does the picture comment function allow a lot of feedback and discussions. But giving a rate doesn't always mean a lot and I'm not into explaining every vote I gave.

Sometimes I find it necessary to explain what I think as I did here:http://www.globosapiens.net/eirekay/picture-motorcycle-milkman-37463.html

I think this is a true gem and I tried to explain why I came to this conclusion. I thought that some people might not be as positive as I was and I thought it might help the picture get fairer votes.

You want to know why somebody gave your picture a three star rating. Of course three stars is not five but it's still good after all we discussed the rating scheme. I think in general people are to lazy and are giving away the full five star vote unneccessarily often. If we stick to our scheme: excellent (*****), very good (****), good(***), fair(**), not good (*) we have to be concervative with the top vote in order to being able to honour the true gems.

True gems like the angkor picture of Gloria:

http://www.globosapiens.net/gloriajames/picture-impressive-angkor-wat-37621.html

or the penguin sunset of Jorge:

http://www.globosapiens.net/jorgesanchez/picture-nights-were-magical-in-french-antarctica-islands-26068.html

they are so very special that the full five should be rewarded only to pics in this quality.

I think that most pictures here are in the *** league.

Your west shore picture:

http://www.globosapiens.net/horourke/picture-west-shore-37620.html

doesn't qualify for the full five in my opinion.

What is it that I don't like as much?

It's a nice peaceful picture. The reflection in the water is great. The colors in the water are intense and vibrant. The green colors of the hill are a bit weak it's perhaps just slightly overexposed. The same applies to the sky it's a bit overexposed (in the left hand side there's only white and not blue anymore.

The composition is centered (the water level lies in the center of the picture.) Centered pictures tend to be a bit boring with time. Perhaps I would have loved a bit more foreground, perhaps a lower shooting position with more foreground and the water line on the upper third would have been more interesting and a true portrait format would have been better. The tree in the left side foreground is too dark a fill in flash could have brightend it up a bit. Perhaps also move more to the left side and have the tree more in the picture and avoid the overexposed part of the picture.

Conclusion.

A nice reflection, some exposure problems, some composition problems, the scene is not very special or seldom could be in a few parts of the world that I know... definitely *** for the nice reflection one could possibly vote ****

And as always these are just my 2ct's with no claim to have the key to wisdom.

hope it helps

Martin

I am sorry to have taken so much of your time. Purpose of my question was to find out if a phantom rater who downgraded ten of my highest ranking pictures some months ago was at it again.(gave all my five star pictures a single star)

that person ignored Andreas's request to contact me.

I am very glad to learn that this is not the case

very kind regards

hugh
