I'd really like, to still have more views of our members on the pictures. Every single member more who joins in the discussion is important. When we are talking about picture quality and rating we are also discussing our 5 star system.... How do you interprete the 5 stars? I rekon there are several views of the standards. Would you please post your understanding... Like that we probably will end up with a general agreement on the stars. Just to start off I copied an interpretation already given in another topic: [zero stars] - dont rate non-travel or indecent pictures at all! * relevant to travel and/or the community, nice ** the mediocre pic, good title and description or technically ok *** technically good, focused, colour, contrast, interesting **** technically brilliant, good composition, lighting, shadows, colourful ***** exellent first impression, unique situation or place, scratch and dust free, picture tells a story, something unusual about the picture... Yes, I agree that Globo should only reflect the best, but it is also a guide for traveling. In some situations, one can have a picture that is not that great, but the subject matter can be quite interesting. Therefore it should be rated high too, don't you think? It's a great pic in all. Yet it only had a rating of 3 before my rating that is ;-). But because it was a lamppost, generally it will be rated less than a scenery, even though the subject matter is as important as per Art and history than a scenery. Another approach for the rating could be: * Bad picture please delete... ** below average *** average **** Good ***** Great/Perfect There's the problem that 5 stars are possible... if people are not sure they tend to go for the middle. But if you look at the rating system above then you could skipp * as this is really not worth uploading... and then you just got 4 stars left! And now it would be just a question what is good. I would like to be a better photography but this only comes with practise. I tend to gives stars on whether I like the pictures or not. If I don't like the picture I don't rate it. But there has to be something which is appealing to me. I have noticed there is a bias towards scenic pictures. and I think we should be able to like other things apart from nature scenes. A simple point and click can also be a very good picture. As you say rightfully it's always in the eye of the one that looks at the image to decide whether to like or dislike the picture. But, how do you think about the stars? How do you make up your mind how many stars to give the picture? Is there a general guideline you follow, which could be of help to other members? There are many who are not photographers by nature, however, we all tend to have our own aesthetics (from Greek aisthEtikos of sense perception, from aisthanesthai to perceive). We each have that which excites our senses and that which "turns us off." I like a combination of the star systems that you mention, Martin. However, that is also tempered by personal taste in subject matter. All of this discussion is wonderful and should give us all a greater appreciation for the efforts of others. Nothing is clear and definite at the moment, I would say. There is also this possiblity: ***** Perfect shot **** Great shot *** good shot ** average shot * below average There's a big difference.
