Wrote to Eiri on her question on how I did it:

Hi Eiri,

You wrote:

Your underwater photos are fantastic. What is your secret? I must take 20 photos for every good underwater pic I get. The detail in these is marvelous! I am jealous!

You guessed it... I take 20 shots to get 1 good photo ;-]

no, I am actually taking lots of photo's but the secret is having a good balance (do your PPB training) and have good equipment too.

Currently I am using a Canon ixus 430 camera in a Canon housing. It's cheap (ish) compared to the more proffessional kit. I will need to upgrade again next year or so...

Two years ago I used those cheap underwater camera's you can buy for 25 Euro... They worked great... See my Egypt pictures...

Cheers,

Maurice

Maurice,

I am also using a Canon - 410S in a Canon housing. Taking a que from some of the more professional kits, this last dive I inserted a piece of red cellophane in the lens area of the housing to balance the blues/greens that tend to wash out a lot of my photos. I find that I have lighting issues with when to use the diffuser or not.

hey Eirekay,

If you check my photos, you will see most of them are closeup or macro.... with those I always use the standard diffusor. I do not use any filters on my photos when I shoot them. When I have panoramic pics and stuff in the distance I tend to use photoshop filters to correct for the blue.

Cheers,

Maurice

Hi all!

I just posted some new underwaterpics from my collection at Dahab (Egypt).

Have a look I am sure you like them. I will upload more but at the moment I am maxed out... 11 pics per month is not much.

Cheers,

Maurice

Maurice, just what kind of lens do you have on that Canon? Wow - these are great close-ups! Also, are you using the built-in flash? I either get washed out by too much light or too grainy from not enough light.

A very simple and easy to use Canon Ixus 430, 2 years old. This camera can do macro's up to 2.5 cm from the lens.

My Ixus has a big drawback when doing flash photo's though. The flash is located close to the lens... therefore it casts a shadow of the lens on the lower right corner. In some photo's you wold be able to see that very clearly. Best way to reduce that effect is to always have the diffusor in the uw case. (but then you cannot use the camera for other flashphotos.)

On UW closeup and macro photo's I always use the built in flash. On land I have same experiences with closeupflash that you do. The UW casing seems to get rid of that problem.

Cheers,

Maurice
