I'd like to talk about this writer. He is Chilean and most of his books take place in South America, he is very good at describing the Pampa, Patagonia...etc...His books are not travel books as such but you really have the feeling you've been there, I LOVE it!

He wrote an autobiographical novel entitled "The Nephew From America" (it might not be the exact title, I just translated the French one. sorry) He tells about how he kept the promise he had made to his grandaddy, namely go back to Spain to see his uncle. So we are told about his long journey and the interesting people he met and all that....it's just great, I love it. I do recommend all the novels written by Luis Sepulveda, he's so talented and yet not very famous, his most famous book is "The Old Man Who Read Love Stories" and it's a masterpiece believe me!

Well, if some are interested and decide to read it let me know! It's not very long...about 120 pages or so.

See ya!

Hi there,

I have just been reading about your recommendations for Luis Sepulveda. I have a feeling I may have read something of his but the name escapes me. I enjoy reading Latin American writers in general. I have read something of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I don't know whether you have read him but I enjoyed a "Cien Anos de Soledad". I have "El mundo es ancho y ajeno" by Ciro Alegria here to read but as it was given to me by my tour guide in the Amazon & is in Spanish I need to really concentrate on it and have not found the time as yet.

Cheers,

Kerrie

Hi Kerrie!!

I am very happy you're interested in South American writers. I love them!!! I have read "Cien Anos de Soledad" but I read it in French cuz my Spanish is not good yet. I loved it, what did you think of it? It was totally new to me, never read anything of the kind before, it was real fun.

I may read this book by Ciro Alegria, but I need to find the title in French, or in English at least!! Sepulveda's not very famous but he one a price for THE OLD MAN WHO READ LOVE STORIES and ever since he's been very successful. I really recommend him, he's great!

You've been to the Amazon LUCKY YOU!!!! I shall go there one day, I swear! :-D

Thanks for posting, and let me know if you read any of Sepulveda's books!

Hi there,

First of all my apologies for not replying sooner! Too much work.

I too have never read anything quite like like "100 years of Solitude" either. About three quarters of the way thru I thought....whereis this going but perservere to the end & it all falls into place.

The book I have by Ciro Alegria is "The world is wide & alien" if I have translated it correctly.

I went into the Amazon out from Puerto Maldonado but due to the weather gods (it rained) it was a bit of a disappointment but you can't have all the good luck every where you travel, my guide made up for it as you know he is the one gave me the book.

When I get a chance I will definately get to the library and find one of Luis Sepulvedas books and let you know.

Keep travelling.

Cheers,

Kerrie
