Member opinion: I get the irony - I am a tourist and I hate tourists. Maybe hate is too strong a word but you get my drift.
The floating market is billed as a "MUST SEE" in Bangkok but don't bother. It may have been charming and authentic 10 years ago but now it has all the personality of a Disney ride. There are more tourist boats in the water (and we got there early) then there are vendors. The boats are selling overpriced souvenirs (you can buy a Gucci handbag or a handpainted umbrella for 3X the price you would pay elsewhere!). As an example, in the photo below, you'll see five boats of tourists (one is a covered boat), a boat selling hats, and a boat looking for tourists to take around. The shores are jam packed with agressive touts trying to sell you any and everything.
And a 90 minute ride from Bangkok, this is hardly a cheap date. An expensive and time consuming trip, the Float Market was my biggest regret in Thailand which I otherwise truly adored.
