Douz is a large oasis on the edge of the sandy Sahara Desert, boasting half a million palmtrees. It often dubbed as the Gateway of the Sahara, and tourists come to Douz to venture to the nearby sand dunes. The town is just a large oasis with limited things to see in terms of monuments, architecture or historical features. Most visitors come to Douz for the camels, dunes and the sun. There is an interesting but small market in the centre of the town, which is busy only on selected days, as the merchants tour the oases nearby as well. The oasis is connected with the rest of the country by coaches and minibuses, which run to Tozeur in the west and Gabes and Matmata in the east. There is a good hotel base in Douz with upscale hotels located on the southern end of the palmeraie, offering great comforts, swimming pools, and tours to the sands. [edit text]  [editors]
