Travel guide to El Jem
Feeling the old times
Feeling the old times
El Jem is an uninspiring, modern Tunisian town in the middle of the Sahel region. Yet, at its heart, world's third largest ancient Roman amphitheatre stands. The colosseum was constructed in the second century by the Imperial official Gordian. It was big enough to provide a seat for every single inhabitant of the ancient El Jem called at that time Thysdrus. According to certain records, the ancient Thysdrus was not big enough to fill all the colosseum's seats. So, spectators from other, nearby cities travelled for the bloody shows. Entry to the colosseum in April 2010 was TND8 (£4), plus TND1 for a camera.

Apart from the Roman colosseum, the sights of El Jem are still covered by sand. And the city of El Jem is a sleepy place without much character. But the colosseum is great, almost as big as the one of Rome, and in better condition. It is 148 metres long by 122 metres wide, with tiers up to 35 metres. [edit text]  [editors]
