The large but well organised city of Sfax has the largest most complete wall surrounding an old quarter, the medina, in Tunisia. Its medina conforms to the Islamic principles of architecture. In fact, the medina is a perfect example how old towns of the Islamic world were built, with the main mosque built right in the centre of the walled town. The medina walls are amongst the best preserved of all medinas in the country. The Ribat at the south-western corner of the old town is now an interesting architecture museum.

Overall Sfax seems relaxed given its size. The medina is not over crowded, there are not that many touts, and the cafes are more women-friendly, compared with other parts of Tunisia. The city has a good hotel base as well, and is well linked with the rest of the country by road, rail and air. [edit text]  [editors]
