Sunrise at the salty lake Chott El Jerid

Chott el Jerid is a periodic salt lake in central Tunisia on the footsteps of the Sahara's sand dunes. It lies roughly between Tozeur and Douz, two of Tunisia tourism destinations. The lake is passable via a causeway built on a dyke right through the lake. Salt deposits are collected on a semi-industrial scale and amusing and simple salt sculptures are erected along the causeway. If water is present, it takes a nice pinky hue, which looks surreal. The lake is said to be the best place in Tunisia to spot mirages. [edit text] [editors]
