Tunis was a bit of a surprise, as there is a wonderful French feel mixed in with Arabic. It is the focal point and home to 1 in 10 of the population.
Avenue Habib Bourguiba is considered the ‘Champs Elysees’ of Tunis, as it is the most prestigious thoroughfare and has a sense of charm as it is tree lined, with European styled street lamps, complete with alfresco dining in cafes. Where the avenue begins, at the end of Avenue de France is the Cathedral de St Vincente de Paul, a Catholic church which was built in 1882 and just opposite in the French Embassy. Tunis was a French protectorate until 1956 when it was granted independence. [edit text][editors]
