Be Warned. This city is addictive. It's a full-on assault on the senses, but for those who can stick it out, Kathmandu will get under your skin, into your soul and captivate you with its naked and undiluted humanity.

| Favourite spots: |
1. Freak Street provides a window, albeit a little tamer these days, into the hippie culture of the Summer of Love.
2. The fascinating marketplaces, lanes and squares of the old city marks the commencement of the old trade route to Tibet -- and it hasn't changed much.
3. Durbar Square is an architectural and spiritual feast; sit by a temple with a cup of chaiya and watch the world go by.

| What's really great: |

The people. Friendly, curious and humble -- they find themselves in the 21st century while their city struggles with the 20th century. An interesting paradox for them, a confronting one for those travelling from the western world.

| Accommodations: |
1. Century Lodge; in the middle of Freak Street and built in 1972 for the hippies, this place oozes atmosphere. Clean and cheap (150-400rp), some rooms even have ensuite.
2. Himalayas Guesthouse; also in Freak Street, and with similar prices, this place is kept spotless and the views from the rooftop terrace are incredible.

| Restaurants: |
1. Cosmopolitan; overlooking Basantapur Square, the curries, momos and vege dishes are all good in this cheap, traditional restaurant run by a local family. A meal for two costs around 200-300rp.
2. Snowman; just off Freak Street, this is a great place for coffee and cake when you need a break from Nepalese food. 100rp will get you a good snack and real coffee.
