Chester is, as its name suggests, one of the England towns based on a Roman military settlement. In addition to its rather scant Roman remains, it has a cathedral and shops called the rows, 18th century buildings with shops on two storeys.
It lies on the river Dee and it is possible to get boat trips in summer. [edit text][editors]
