Edinburgh Bruntsfield Youth Hostel
This was one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. It was extremely clean with a friendly, helpful staff. There is a pool table, TV, kitchen, and eating area for guests to use at their leisure. There are shops, supermarket, restaurants, and bars 5min away. It is about a 20min walk from the Old town, but it is a nice walk if you take the path through the parks. A bonus, it is very quiet because it is in a residential neighborhood, you do not hear people screaming in the middle of the night or fumbling around drunk after coming from the bar. Most people think that hostels are just for backpackers, not true, there were actually a few families staying in this hostel. It is a great way to travel cheaply and get more than many hotels give you (namely a kitchen!). more

Hi-brow hotspot in happening Eburgh. Not the place for beerdrinking lads from england, but more for cocktail sipping babes, Saudi princes and the young and restless from Western Europe who come to party in Scotland.

Mercat Tours
A must-do when visiting Edinbugh is a ghost tour of the city and the underground vaults. There are so many tour companies offering similar tours, but what most people dont know is that some are more theatrical than others. We did not want any people jumping out in front of us or other planned scaring techniques, if we saw something we wanted it to be the real thing. We took The Ghosthunter Train tour with Mercat Tours, with no theatrics, just a really excellent storyteller. Even though we did not experience any ghosts or other paranormal activity, it was still scary and entertaining! I would recommend the tour we took, and the others since they are proven to not be theatrical in any way. more

The Oxford Bar
A marvellous find, tucked away in the next street up from the infamous Rose Street. A real locals pub where you are hit by the age and it's tiny size as soon as you enter. The bar area is only about 4 feet wide but a little exploration finds an interesting snug to the right hand side. Literary articles line the walls with the pubs favourite son being novelist Ian Rankin who allegedly based some of his characters on people in the pub. Both the staff and regulars are receptive to visitors and happy to chat which provides for a nice friendly atmosphere. Definitely a pub to search out, but do not confuse with the Cambridge a little further along Young St. more

Frankenstein
If you like wacky refurbishments and strange theme pubs this is a place not to miss. It is basically a church with a pub based on a Frankenstein theme built inside it. One can only imagine the thought process by which they arrived at this juxtaposition between good and evil, but it works perfectly.
Based on three levels, it is quite obviously a church with the pulpit visible behind the main bar where a DJ performs in the evenings. The lower bar has a lifesize display of Frankenstein's monster and the toilets have spooky sounds piped into them.
Frankenstein movies are shown on TV's dotted around the bars and there are two big screens used for sporting events. The food is good and service is attentive and friendly. Very popular Friday and Saturday evenings.
If you are visiting Edinburgh, search it out and go there, if only for curiosity value. more
