Plymouth is by far the largest city in England west of Bristol, although it's Exeter that's the county town of Devon, where both are situated.
The centre of Plymouth was obliterated in WW2 and the city was quicker in its plans for rebuilding than anywhere comparable in England.
Others then learned and developed so that Plymouth is now like a living museum of the 40s in the centre.
Its waterfront is great, scenic and busy, with a breakwater and Drake's island forming the near view. 1588 is a date known here to every primary school child for the defeat of the great armada from Spain..
There is easy access to the south coasts of Cornwall and Devon and to Dartmoor. [edit text][editors]
