Known as a quintessential town, Salisbury is only about a 2 hours drive south-west of London and makes a good day or weekend-trip out of the crowded capital. The history and age of things in town are impressive. For example, the Cathedral was discovered over 800 years ago, and has the tallest spire in Britain, along with the world’s best preserved Magna Carta (literally meaning ‘Great Paper’ it was an agreement between the Pope and the then King of England and influenced the process of constitutional law).
There is also a restaurant / chop house called the Haunch of Venison that serves great food but is known for a mummified hand that was apparently hacked off during a game of card and a resident ghost.
Just outside of the town centre is an ironage fortification – the Old Sarum, which is set on a hilltop which was used by Romans, Normans and Saxons; not to mention in the next town the famous and curious prehistoric "Stonehenge" monument. [edit text][editors]
