Sheepstor, on Dartmoor, is the name of both a village and a tor [granite outcrop on a hilltop.] Both are rather special.
The little granite church has some interesting tombs, one of the first Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke and another of some German airmen who went down during the second world war.
The tor is supposedly shaped like a sheep, though some imagination does help here! What is certain is that generations of young children from Plymouth and elsewhere have enjoyed grand games among its numerous rocks. Searching for the pixies' [or piskies'] cave has been another delight [even if finding it can produce disappointment.
The views are great and include Burrator Reservoir nearby, which is very scenic. [edit text][editors]
