Barnsley, formerly a major coal mining town is not known for much except the very broad Yorkshire accent of its people and being the place to initiate a huge miners' strike several years back that culminated in all of the mines being abruptly shut down and causing mass unemployment in the area. Being from Sydney, Australia myself, I hardly go a day without someone saying to me 'Barnsley! What are you doing in Barnsley?' And fair do's, I do not know many people from Barnsley who have ventured far from their own territory, they are not particualry 'worldly' folk. Most have friends or family who have gone overseas, I have been told many stories of family members leaving and never coming back, which I think, more or less sums the place up. What I can say is this, I have met some of the kindest, friendliest people (if you can understand them) since living here, and it lies half way between and just half an hour drive from Sheffield and Leeds City Centres and one hour from Manchester.
