It's not just the fact that it's in York itself that would make York Minster the first religious building thought of in Yorkshire. It's one of Britain's best. Even so it would be a shame to leave the county without a visit to its other ancient cathedral at Ripon. This is one of relatively few in the UK built with a view to concealment from invaders and cnsequently doesn't impress with its height. On hte other hand its western façade is as good as any in England and the wood carving on the choir stalls is stageringly good.
Only a few miles from here you can visit Yorkshire's finest abbey remains [some claim!] at Fountains Abbey, a Cistercian foundation, preferably in Autumn, when the trees of adjacent studeley Royal take on magnificent colouring. [edit text][editors]
