The City of Cortez was originally named for conquistador Hernando Cortez and is a popular stop for tourists due to its close proximity to a variety of nearby tourist destinations (Mesa Verde National Park, Monument Valley, and the Four Corners).

Until recently, a nearby highway was Route 666. It was changed in 2003 to Route 491, largely due to superstition that the road was cursed. [edit text]  [editors]
