In the heart of the North Georgia mountains lies the city of Clayton. This small city seems to be nothing more than a bedroom community for the surrounding area, but the scenery is marvelous and it serves as a remarkable base for other activities. Clayton is located 13 miles from the border of South Carolina. From there, one can raft or canoe the mighty Chattooga River (made famous by the movie, Deliverance). Actually, there are 3 major whitewater rivers within one-hour's drive. Located 45 miles north is the city of Franklin, North Carolina(gemstone capital of the world). Here, the visitor can try his/her luck at mining for gemstones, especially rubies. Of course, a trip to Brasstown Bald (the highest mountain in Georgia) could be taken. There are 50 scenic waterfalls within a drive of one hour, as well. In all, quite a remarkable small town. [edit text][editors]
