Travel guide to Waimea
Beginning of the canyon
Beginning of the canyon
Waimea is a small town in the West Side area of Kauai, the words literally translates from Hawaiian to ‘red water’, which is why this town/word appears on all of the Hawaiian Islands.

Kauai was discovered in 1778 by Captain James Cook and is the last island in the Hawaiian archipelago chain. Captain Cook came ashore in the town of Waimea, near the mouth of the Waimea River and statue has been erected to commemorate this occasion.

Most visitors who come to the town are usually heading for the Waimea Canyon which is described as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific as there are many ridges and trails to hike.

The town has one set of traffic lights that was installed to control the flow of sugar cane trucks from tourists as it was the town’s major industry. The traffic light no longer works and the sugar cane industry has ceased but the tourists still come. [edit text]  [editors]
