Formia, a city on the Appian Way is situated almost half way between Rome and Naples. The ruins of a bygone era are scattered around Formia, but some ancient buildings have been reasonably well preserved by the people who have chosen to live in them. Recycling buildings is Formia's style. When I first visited Formia in 1998 I didn't think that the city paid much attention to tourism. They welcomed newcomers and visitors but facilities to attract tourists were non existant at that time. When I returned in 2001, I nearly didn't recognise it as the same place. Information was far easier to come by and there was evidence of thought and some planning around attracting tourists -- of course this could be good and bad, I guess.
