Bangkok (2002)

  8 votes

This my first trip to Bangkok i must say i was really, really looking forward to. I wasn't let down either. This has got to be one of the most fasinating cities I have ever been to. It is one of the dirtiest cities in the world yet I think that is what makes Bangkok. Arriving at night at about 11pm to see the streets absolutely crammed with cars, lorries, motorbikes and the excellent tuk-tuks made me laugh so much. Everything about this city made me smile and I will certainly be going back here.

Favourite spots:
The Grand Palace is absolutely fantastic, so clean and just a beauty to look at. The MBK shopping centre, 6 floors of absolute shopping paradise, i was in my element. Patpong Market - This was an absolute laugh and a half. Doesn't start until 8pm but goes on until roughly 2am. If you want your counterfeit goods, well this is the place to go. Spent an absolute fortune here. It's also the heart of the Club land where you will also find the Ping-Pong bars. Quite an eye opener I'll tell you. They are very accurate with the balls i'll add. Not that we actually saw them, just something i've heard.

What's really great:
I just loved hailing the tuk-tuks and arranging fares with the drivers and then setting off around the streets of Bangkok. We payed 60Baht for a driver for roughly 4 hours. The only condition being that he take us to his sponsors en route to see if we fancied purchasing the odd thing. It's pretty heavy stuff but just learn to say no and you still only pay the agreed fare. The driver gets free petrol out of his sponsors for taking you to their shops. We generally gave them a tip to buy their kids some sweets with. Also really liked all the foodstalls on the sides of the streets, which on the whole were very nice dishes.

Sights:
Temple of Emerald Buddha(spelling?)
Grand Palace
MBK Centre
Patpong Market

Accommodations:
We stayed in the Hotel Asia. Absolutely gorgeous place. Had 2 or 3 swimming pools, Sun terrace, Tennis courts, 3/4 Restaurants and lots more. The rooms were quite standard but very comfy with satellite tv. About £13 pppn I think.

Restaurants:
Good food wherever we went really. Just be cautious.
