Ko Samui (2002)

  7 votes

We flew out to Samui for a weeks break before heading back to Bangkok en route to UK. Although now it is a lot more commercialised than it used to be, it was an excellent place and absolutely loved every minute.

Favourite spots:
Didn't really explore the island too much as was basically a relax by the pool kind of break but did go on a few rambles. Went on an Elephant trek through the centre of the island for an hour which was really cool. Saw plenty of wildlife including massive black snake which Joanna almost sat on by waterfall. The monkeys back at the headquarters were pretty funny to watch too. Also the 1 yr old elephant was pretty cute. Went by taxi to otherside of island for about £3 and spent the evening celebrating the Chinese New Year with the locals. Chaweng Road was awesome for shopping and atmosphere....I could go on and on really.

What's really great:
I totally enjoyed just chilling on the sun-bed having the odd Thai (brutal) massages and having drinks brought to me all day, WONDERFUL!! Also loved sitting in the bars at night playing Jenga with the Bar girls trying to work out whether they were she's or him's if you know what i mean. Sometimes its hard to tell. Scary!!

Sights:
Big Buddha Beach
Waterfall in centre of Island
Elephant Trek (a must)
Snorkelling
Beaches(loads of secluded ones)

Accommodations:
We stayed in the Chaweng Buri Resort at the southern end of Chaweng Beach. A very nice resort set in beautiful gardens with individual bungalows which all lead down to the beach. Lovely buffet breakfast included in price and the most comfiest sun-loungers in the world i reckon. Highly recommend this place as really well priced.

Nightlife:
Christies Cabaret Bar - If you want your mouth to hit the floor with amazement you have to go in here. It took us 5 days to pluck up the courage to go in but when we did, BOY did we have a laugh. The first thing we were met with when entering the doors was a Lady Boy on a podium just flashing all and sundry at us. WOW...she/he was gorgeous. In the end you just sit and stare in amazement at how sexy these boys can make themselves look. It certainly makes you think twice when you see a girl on the street walking by.

Hangouts:
We found a bar in amongst a host of bars set back off the main street. Forget the name but the Lady in charge was called Pat of all names. Very hospitable bar with the Worlds greatest Connect4 players and Jenga champions. Also you get free drinks if you dance on the podium for a whole song with the girls, so i felt obliged to do this on several occasions. Was a cheap night out though.

Restaurants:
Various ones along the main street. There was one in particular that was gorgeous.
