Did you go to kelimutu from Moni? Any photos?

wojtekd - Mar, 19 2008 05:03pm
Yes, Marianne - I already publish two pictures from the crater rim of Kelimutu - just sort my pics according "date posted" to find them. I can promise you more, if you wish... But three stars only for that picture... Hmm... It is full of life, well exposed and it brings quite a lot of info for the future traveller. Do you prefere landscapes to the such scenes of life?

Excellent picture. It deserves five points for the remote place only. How many Globo memebrs have been in Moni??? Apart from it, it shows market life. Bravo traveler!

Jorge, Moni is not that remote and very much on the tourist track. I am sure other Globies have been there (me included)

That's nice to hear, Marianne that you did see Moni and Kelimutu. On the same morning when I was climbing Kelimutu there were only 2 (two) other tourists. So it is hard to say that it is in the main tourist track like Java and Bali. From my fresh experience very few tourist visiting Indonesia now go farther then Labuanbajo-Komodo.

The photo appears a little dark on my machine, but I really like it, as it illustrates nicely the life of the local simple people. I intially wanted to contribute to the discussion whether the location is remote, on the tourist track or not remote (I have not been there and only went as far as Rinca island and Labuanbajo), etc., but eventually decided to stay off this subject.

Marianne, glad to read that you travelled to Moni. I did not.
What I mean is that pictures featuring far reaching places should be extra appreciated for the effort to get there. For a European travelling to Moni is not like taking the train from Amsterdam to Munich.
Besides of that, that picture shows daily life, people working, and selling fruits. It shows us their culture, their food products, their physical aspect.... Look the natural look of the ladies. I prefer that kind of pictures than monuments such as Eiffel Tower.

Jorge, to me it is a fantastic image but definitely not 5*, fails some technicalities like 1024x800 format ooption and there is a hidden person in the picture, also a red bum.... :-) [4.0] Great, but not a gem.

jorgesanchez - Mar, 20 2008 05:03pm
Rudi, OK, I agree with 4 points, but not 3 as it had before. The picture tells so much…!

The main lady has a resigned look with her situation, rather sad. She will never get rich by selling fruits, even if she sells everything on the floor. She knows that every day she will have to fight again for her daily life, to earn a few rupees, amount that people in Europe give as a tip when having dinner in a restaurant. Does not that fact make you think?
It is a lesson of local lives. It shows the level of life of that village and the level of life difference with Western standards.
It is not a “folkloric” picture, but a real picture. People live like that in many parts of the world. I can’t imagine my mother earning her living that way. And still…
It is a very didactic picture and because of that, in my opinion, deserves to be evaluated by these anthropological values rather than by photographical technicalities.

jorgesanchez - Mar, 20 2008 05:03pm
Rudi, can you imagine? I have seen foreigners, auto called “travellers”, rich, with good cameras and expensive clothes Indiana Jones type, bargaining to death with those ladies to get their pineapple a little bit cheaper. And they consider themselves “good travelers” if they obtain it a few rupees cheaper.

krisek - Mar, 20 2008 06:03pm
A bit off subject, I guess... I think the photo is great, the ladies are almost in their natural poses and it is a great picture of what life of certain people looks like. Bargaining and everyday struggles of poor people are different subjects... (and there are extremely rich people in Indonesia and very poor people in the EU, by the way).
