Summer 2004: Vassieux-en-Vercors

One of my camps this summer was in Vassieux-en-Vercors, or in short simply: Vassieux. With the smallest group I ever went on a camp, we stayed there for 10 days.




	Viewing at the edge of the plateau

Vassieux is a VERY small village (not much more than just 1 street) in the Vercors park. It is located on a plateau in the pre-mountains of the Alps. This means it is'nt all that high and also hasn't really moutaintops in it's direct surroundings. It's an hour-drive away from Die-en-Vercors, a way bigger village and much more visited by tourists. At the end of WOII, there have been some serieus murders in the Village and almost nobody survived. Vassieux 'celebrated' the 60th anniversary on a moment we were there. So the prime minister of France came over. Which made it more special ofcourse...

We went out, MTB-ing on a sunny day. From the highest place we reached, we had a view over the whole plateau, which was really nice!! The picture shows Vassieux from that spot.

What's really great:




	Tents at the foot of a small mountain

We went on a two-day trip to another very small village not that far away from Vassieux. But by following some extra tracks, we could fill up the whole day by walking. The maps where for France maps extremely accurate. I think there were no more than 3 tracks we took, who weren't on the map. And I can tell...this really is a very good rate for a France map. The camping we stayed at was quite awsome. We had a separated terrain, away from other campers, which made it good to play some games and do some relaxing. We put up our tents and watched the stars whole night long.

Sights:

You should have a car (or with a group a bus) to get to the places in the surroundings. If you don't have this feature, it is hard to get there and there isn't all that much to do...

Accommodations:




	Us

The place we stayed at is especially for groups of people. So you won't be able to hire a room or so, just for 2 or 3 people. The best shot you have is in the village itself, where there do is a small hotel, which looked OK at the outside. And otherwhise you better go to a hotel in Die, where there is way more accomodation for tourists.

Hangouts:

There are a couple of pubs in the village. But that's where it stops. So you can relax on a terras with a cool drink or an ice-cream. But don't expect much of a lunch or dinner. It is quite Southern-France, so people are way more chilled and they don't do all that much :)

Restaurants:

I think there is one restaurant, under the only hotel in town. Never tried it, so I can't tell you much about it.
