Adelaide - the City of Churches

  11 votes
After a 14-hour flight from San Francisco, I finally landed in Sydney but unfornately, I did not make reservations for accommodations - it was Mardi Gras Weekend. So I made my way to Wollongong, the nearest place close to the beach where I could get room.

After recouping for couple of days, I took the bus & train to Canberra. I can say that I saw the nation's capital city. The bus ride was terrific - it was the most magnificent views of the what looked like a misty rainforest. From Canberra, I took the train to Melbourne which reminded me of Seattle and San Francisco and since I have already lived those beautiful cities, I thought I would try Adelaide. Adelaide hit the spot. It is a quiet city with old world charms and friendly people. I love the churches and there are many of them. Not in a short supply are the cafes for a constant flow of espresso drinks. I was pleasantly surprise that Australia had that many coffee shops and being a coffee drinker I was in caffeine heaven. I love that I could take a trolly and head out to the beach and coming back to the city I could stop at the farmers' market and have dinner and pick up some fruits and vegetables. The array of international restaurants to choose from was a very attractive feature and that wine country was easily accessible. I stayed at Backpacker Oz where the owners, Sam, Tom & Penny (all siblings) made sure that their hostel was a clean, safe, fun place to hang out. They were very helpful organizing tours to Kangaroo Island, Barossa wine country, the outback and other places of interest. If you like a quiet place with great public transportation, an array choice for different foods; some place close to the beach, outdoor activities, shopping, Adelaide might be the place for you. I am so disappointed that I did not have a digital camera at the time - I was reluctant to keep up with technology and I regret it. I wish I had some photographs to insert but you will have to really to out there to enjoy it.

Favourite spots:
The farmers' market, Rundell Mall, the beach, being able to have long enjoyable walks.

What's really great:
People in Australia are the friendliest people in the world. I like that there is a variety of places and activities that is so easily accessible without Adelaide being a congested crowded city.

Sights:
The Churches,

Accommodations:
BackerPackers Oz - friendly, clean, convenient and affordable
