Enjoying the surf at Bocas del Toro

  7 votes

Forget the hustle of C. American cities... visit Bocas del Toro for a relaxed and unpretentious stay. Located just of Panama's border with Costa Rica, the island has good tourist infrastructure in the form of hotels, restaurants and luxuries but presently seems to be a slowly maturing hotspot!

I was able to travel by bus from San Jose, CR through the border post at Sixaola and onward by taxi and water taxi to the wonderful islands.

Favourite spots:
Made up of multiple islands; each with its own flavour. The blended population and the parque central in Bocas! Too many pristine beachs to count. Adventurous overland travel from San Jose, CR. The hilarity of realising the new tourist information center was constructed adjacent to the island prison!!!

What's really great:
The Panamanian residents were so friendly and genuine. During the offseason the island is very quiet!

Sights:
Sign on bank door saying: No Armas just like a no smoking sign!!!

My female friend entered and they didn't scan her for any gun, I enter and get scanned... very amusing.

Accommodations:
Las Brisas (but many hotels had that same name?)

Nightlife:
One club across from Parque Central!

Other recommendations:
recently est. Veg restaurant about 10 minutes walk from parque central on the only road outta town
