Hi Tashi,
I see you have travelled quite some in Africa and the Carribean too so my best respect!
I hope though that you are not considering travelling alone in that harsh saharan territory! Can you speak French, English almost tabu? Times change but it is still currently advised NOT to travel to Algeria and Libya by most western governments. Your embassy will confirm this, specially for women.
Tripoli has newly suggested better protection to aliens and is now in 2005 promoting commerce again with europe, great for travellers again.
Algiers hopes to offer protection for non-arabs outside the city since after some hijacking and kidnapping in the desert, 2003.
Tunesia is an international friendy country and very safe. NOT TOURISTY unless you stay at the riviera at Monastir or on the island of Jerba. I'll put some more pictures up for GLOBO. Exploring the desert and Atlas mountains is relatively safe there, a driver/guide is must, like Morocco, only ~ 60-90$/day including ALL costs, or join a group like "Tunisie Voyages" www.globosapiens.net/rangutan/picture-4x4-driver-17021.html for about 30$/day.
Since I will also travel there again, I checked current flight prices. There are currently two best economic ways for europeans to get to these countries:
ALITALIA from Rome flies in Jan/Feb 2006 to Algiers and Tunis (under $400 return) and Tripoli (~$1000) from most European destinations.
KLM/AirFRANCE/NWA "Skyteam" via Amsterdam or Paris at about the same fares as above. NWA=Northwest would be a priceworthy link for members from Vancouver and Seattle in this case, west-coast trans-arctic fares currently about $1200 to european destinations. Buying all the tickets together is sure to be cheaper.
A local travel agent would be very happy with the provisions from a $6000 deal, please shop around, dates and seasons also to be considered, Jan/Feb is good, "off-season"
Currency? Since the main trading partners are countries in Europe I can bet that Euros are accepted. I have never heard about problems with travelling with US-dollars, except(then only offically)Cuba!
RRudi
P.S: I found a new way to define "touristy": Touristy is a place where the public toilet facilities are clean or atleast reasonable. (I had some bad experieces in South America!)
