You need to catch a bus from Alexandria, which is a comfortable spanish turbini train ride from Cairo. At least visit Alexandria, city of Cleopatra & Anthony. If you have an additional week to spare, go to Siwa. Buses run infrequently and vaguely by schedule, so leave lots of buffer time. In December, around X'mas, I plan to spend about 2 weeks in Egypt, with 4-7 days on a cruise. Anybody has any idea where to find a cruise package? Would it be safe to just get to Aswan and board any cruise and ask "Rooms available for two to Luxor?" If you consider diving: go to Dahab or Sharm el-Sheikh. See my report on that!
