I arrived in Bangkok on saturday (4 days ago) and am now in Chang Mai. For the last two days I have had what seems to be the symptoms of malaria (tiredness, sickness, general flu-like illness). It's only mild, and accompanied by an odd ear-ache. I get the idea that malaria takes a week or so to grab hold of you, and that Bankok really isn't a place to get it, so am I being paranoid? Maybe I just have some stomach bug.
I've been taking anti-malarial tablets (Alvoclor I think) for the last two weeks, so i should be ok, but as it can cause death I'd rather not take a risk. Should I wait until I get back to Bangkok before going to the hospital, or wait to see if it gets worse?

detection at early stages is best not only for malaria but for all disease ,
it is nice that you are careful ,but i will advice you to get ur self checked as
ur on travel.
helth is most imp thing in life ,u can enjoy travelling if ur well

Don't worry. You prpbably just caught a cold. Bangkok is not high ridk malaria: This is what The World Health Organisation says about Thailand: Thailand is listed as a category-C-country, but for travellers and holiday-makers only a very small risk exists. Only the border areas to Cambodia and Laos are maleria zones. The south and Bangkok are considered malaria-free.
Malaria symptoms can develop as soon as 6-8 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, or as late as several months after departure from a malarious area, if you are in doubt you can have a blood test. But it is very unlikely that you caught malaria.
Malaria is, as far as I know, never accompanied by ear ache.

I think the same as Marianne.
I had the same when I was in Bangkok during rainy season, we europeans need some days to get used to this climate. And be aware of the way too cold AC all over the place!

Hi rodders,
Sounds like jet-lag or a reaction to your jabs for cholers, typhoid, hepatitis. I had trouble acclimatising when I first came to Thailand many years ago. Now it is not a problem. Thailand is essentially safe and I do not take any anti malarials whilst staying here. However, get it checked out immediately (just for peace of mind) Thai hospitals are very cheap and Doctors cost about £2 per visit. I felt a bit like you this morning after my first night in Bangkok - but I think the Singa and Chang beers were a little too potent!!

Hi, go to a good hotel and ask to see there house doctor. The doctor will know if it is likely that you have malaria. If he thinks you do he will give you antibotics. You probably have something else but it is no use to take a risk. ---

i again wanna tell that i never faced such problem,but it is always advised to take a body lotion which can keep mosquitos away thus safe.
