How 'bout the surface level, I hear a lot of people faint or get headaches upon arrival. Any other advice. There is airport. Where I work, one friend was there last year, and yes, arriving from Chendu he felt headache during two days (you will suddenly at 4000 metros altitud). Nepal is in some ways hard since you can only fly in. Most travelers this way get a group visa which can be extended ONLY in other parts of China but not Tibet. Coming from the Chinese site, there's numerous places you can fly in. Chengdu is probably the easiest and most used way. Going overland: you can join a group and go overland by landrover from Kathmandu or, if you're in China, travel by bus (nice 36 hours) from Golmud in North Tibet. Other options are illegal enter Tibet via either Kashgar (in the far west... fantastic experience) or from either Sichuan or Kunming. It seems to be possible to get a permit for Tibet nowadays but i did it some years ago illegal. Chinese of course will not suffer these problems. Keep in mind if you go you will be on serious altitude and you HAVE to take a few days rest before doing something. The only descent way to cure altitude disease is die or going down. I prefer the second option. There is an airport in Lasha, the ticket normally around 2000RMB. Sorry not sure about the train, as it only starts from this year. Not too many tourists during the winter I reckon, comparing with other places in Tibet, Lhasa is quite moden, but I must say it is a very religious area, better highlight to respect every temple people even dogs. The market is really cool, worth to go. If you wanna experience something different, like an adventury, better to go other towns, such as Ali or even further, but all depends on your health. Coming from Nepal is still a problem, only short 7 days visa's apparantly can cross in tour groups the border. But from the Chinese site it should be no problem.
