Hi
I´m Asta from Iceland, 38 female going insane because I´ve just booked myself on a flight to cancun next tuesday the 7th of nov. and I dont know what to do or where to stay...
Maybe someone can help me or maybe even meet up, it´s scary to travel alone...anyway..I was thinking to start in Isla de mujeres for a few nights just to relax on the beach and do some yoga, but all I found on the internet was very expensive. any advice on that ? Is any other place better to do this ?
And then I want to travel down to Belize, and guatemala...I really want this to be adventurous and on a budget, but also with some yoga, meet good pepole, on the beach, in the montains kind of adventure, but I have no clue what to do or where to search.
I also would really like to meet other people travelling in this area and maybe have some company, I´m good company !
Any advice on charming hostels or good places to do yoga or just about anything that would make my departure feel better, would be greatly appriciated.

Asta,
The coastline along Cancun is very expensive. There are a couple of hotels on Cozumel that are a little less so, but you will find Belize and Guatemala quite a bit cheaper. Placenia has a number of options on or near the beach and is not so touristy. San Ignacio or Orange Walk are both near Mayan ruins and have good hostels. San Ignacio also has a number of mountain lodges that offer different yoga/new age packages - I don't know how much these run. Buses can be had from Belize City to any of these cities. Guatemala also has options - Flores is inland, near the big ruin of Tikal but very reasonable, with lots of bus service. Lake Atitlán is a great area, especially if you like mountain biking or hiking, and is very cheap.
Flores is very accessible from San Ignacio. I would imagine you could catch a bus from Flores to Atitlan.
I found both countries very safe - I've been a couple of times to each, although never alone.
Hope that helps!
Eire

Hi Eire
Thanks for the advice it's well appriciated, I guess I will try to get myself to belize as soon as possible, but I think I want to stay in the cancun area for some days to relax and get over my jet lag, I'm flying for about 20 hours.
would you say that Cozumel would then be my best choise ?
Also do you know the best way to study spanish, private or school ?any advice?
Thanks again

Hi Asta, I haven't been to Mexico yet, so I can't give you any specific advice... my personal choice is usually staying as far away from tourist "hot spots" as possible. It usually pays off in many ways (including budget).
I'm actually planning to travel from North of Mexico all the way to Buenos Aires (my home town). I plan to start early September, so there's a fair chance that I'll still be around Yucatan in November, and I wouldn't mind teaming up for a part of the voyage. I always try to stay flexible in my itinerary, there's so much to see that it's impossible not to get carried away, so anyway... --- shark attack!
