Calke Abbey House & Gardens are now owned by the National Trust. The baroque mansion built between 1701-4 and set in a spectacular ladscape, has been described by the National Trust as a "graphic illustration of the English country house in decline" It has been minimally restored. The house interiors are essentially unchanged since the 1880's. The Harpur-Crewe family lived in the property until it was sold to cover £8 million in unpaid death duties. The gardens are restored and the walled garden is particularly spectacular. A deer park is between the house and the lake.
