Sri Lanka has an abundance of elephants. Wild elephants are plentiful and a visit to Uda Walawe National Park is certain to produce many. Pinnewela Elephant Orphanage near to Kandy is remarkable for its work with orphaned elephants - although it is touristy there are great photo opportunities - the day I was there was in the monsoon season and we all got a good soaking. Earlier at Habarana I came across elephants having a cooling bath in the river - they really were magnificent posing beasts. I was amazed at Ratnapura - the hotel I was staying in was holding a wedding reception and part of the festivities included the hire of the wedding elephant and its mahoot.
