We researched six or seven of the many villages that line Lake Atitlan and settled on a tour of three plus the laid back Panajachel which served as our starting point. Our first selection, San Juan, was chosen for it's fame as a weaving village. We came, we bought. The second, San Pedro, was chosen for it's beautiful but steep hills, offering up stunning views - when we were given the opportunity to horseback ride through the village, that was even better! Our last stop, Santiago, was chosen because it houses Maximon, a Mayan icon which is moved every Easter to a new veneration site. Our transportation to Maximon was via cattle truck.
When we pushed away from the dock at 9am, no one told us that our taxi driver was due back at 2pm. We didn't get back until 6:30 but with six women, there was no way he could have made us go any faster. Besides, it earned him a very good tip!
