Pacaya Volcano is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Guatemala and therefore probably the most climbed. Consecutively active since 1965, it has ongoing lava flows trickling from it's cone and several side chutes. The trail up takes about 1.5 hours each way, the last bit being on loose volcanic gravel and sand. We chose horse as the trail was slick and we got a late start. We were advised to go at dawn or duck because the smoke and fumes cause an amazing sunrise or sunset and the flows are most brilliant in the dark.
