La Posada de Don Rodrigo |
Okay, I wouldn't call it exclusive, but this was our one splurge on this trip ($120/night USD). Don Rodrigo was the Ambassador of Spain to Central America during the 17th century. His home was built to impress visitors of the King. Now 315 years old, it has been converted into a hotel and features much of the original furniture and artwork and all of the original ambiance! Each room has a plaque listing famous guests that have stayed in that room.
There are multiple upstairs terraces and patios, with bar service! The two large courtyards are beautifully landscaped with fountains. The street side rooms have grilled windows with blooming flowers and lots of light, but ask for the interior 200 or 300 rooms which are quieter, although darker and some of which come with hammocks!
The location, right on Calle 5 with the famous Santa Catalina arch and two blocks from the Plaza Centrale, is perfect. The restaurant is pricey but the food is excellent.
