Stanford Canter Rodin Sculpture Garden |

|
The center piece of the Stanford Rodin Sculpture Garden is the the unique "Gates of Hell", a quasi bas relief made up of a number of vingettes. Many of the figures literially writhe from the back drop. A careful eye will see a minature reproduction of Michaelanglo's David and an inspiration from the Sistine Chapel as hands reach to touch each other in the ceiling of the Gates. The piece includes Rodin's Thinker, Lust and Avarice, Mediation with Arms, Three Shades of Man, and a number of other works also appear full sized in either the garden or the attached museum. Robin believed that hands must be as expressive as faces. A display inside features over a dozen such hands in various poses that easily prove this point.
