San Francisco - United States, California One of Chinatown's atmospheric alleys. I always enjoy wandering through the streets and alleys of SF's Chinatown. Down one of the alleys is some sort of school or community center where traditional Chinese music (such as the type played during the lion dances) is practiced, and the sounds of cymbal crashes and drums echoes through the streets. Perhaps the best area to walk through is near the intersection of Stockton and Pacific Streets, where a lot of sidewalk produce vendor stalls are set up in from of the markets. There are also shops that sell life fish, frogs, turtles and even live birds and fowl (chickens, quail, pigeons, etc.), with signs warning one not to take photos or videos for fear of PETA protestors. The live birds are carried home in stapled paper shopping bags with holes slit for ventilation, and can be heard scratching their feet and beating their wings against the bags as they are carried past.
