My boyfriend and I want to backpack the UK, Scotland, Ireland and spend one day and night in Amsterdam. We would like to go in Sept and stay from 30-45 days. Does anyone have a good travel plan? I am totally lost on how long to be in each place and the most efficient route to take.
Any info would help!!!! Places to for sure hit?!

Welcome to Ireland
September is one of the best months to see Ireland. The old people say we always have fifteen fine days here in September.
So the first fifteen days could be your gateway to Europe in Ireland.
We have quite good public transport and You can travel from almost any point on the island to any other in one day.
Since you have a reasonable amount of time, it will be possible to visit some of the offshore islands like Innis Mór, Innish Boffin, Cape Clear etc. where some traditions that have died out on the mainland can be observed.
If you arrive in Dublin, you could do a circuit beginnig with Wicklow and Glendalough and ending with say Belfast. Belfast would also be an excellent deoparture point to start your Scottish tour

Hi,
Rail travel in the UK tends to be very expensive unless you can book very early. Consider using coach travel. Look at National express web site They have a good intercity service which includes local stop offs Eating out is also expensive as is bed and breakfast so try and stay in youth hostels and book ahead to avoid disappointment. I have found that the Dorling Kingsley travel guides are very reliable, if they mention a location it is usually worth a visit; It does not have accommodation however.
The Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, the West Country( include the Dorset coast if you like looking for fossils), Bath, York are among my favorites. And London of course.
Good Luck

I have just found that if you enter hostels in Ireland in the search slot at the top of the Globo site page you will find useful details.
In the case of the Aran Islands, some hostel accommodation for Sep 10/11 is already booked up so a survey of any remote hostels you may be considering might be useful at this time! --- Hugh

This might help if you are interested in the historic side of Britain, feel the need for a bit of “culture” or just want to stay somewhere nice and possibly a bit off the beaten track. I have just been on a trip around the UK and had that age old problem of either finding out about some of the great places and tours on the day I was leaving, or turning up on a closed day or turning up and they were full. It got really annoying!! I’ve now found a new website called historicbritain.com which looks like it could be really useful on my next trip. Its only just started with a few places but soon it’ll have loads of places on there (and tours and activities) with maps, photos and all the information you want. I think that it looks really helpful because you’ll be able to work out where to go, find out about everything to do there AND book tickets so that you can’t get turned away at the gates!! I used it to book an historic walking tour in Oxford the other day and it then suggested a place to stay – in one of the colleges no less! And if it can persuade the colleges of Oxbridge to open their doors then hopefully it’ll help loads more attractions to open up in the future.
Its only just started but I think it could be really useful in the future – and could help us keep these great places alive and accessible. http://www.historicbritain.com
